MediaPost: New gTLD’s Will Change Search

Right… Of course this greatly depends on who ends up with all of the GTLD’s. If Google ends up controlling all 101 of the strings they applied for, I don’t think Bing or Yahoo are going to rush out to support this new shift they’re proposing. The only reason marketers and agencies might support this idea (or SEO firms for that matter) is that they’re frustrated that there’s an after market and that some domains are quite expensive. It’s a self serving statement and one that is not based on anything factual. I’ve got no idea how so many people seem to think that .Com is going to go away. In 30 years, maybe, but the boomer generation is not going to adopt these new strings. Educating people on the thousands of new strings will be the equivalent of having someone shopping for a new car walk through a car lot and have 1,000 new auto manufacturers all try to get their attention...
